Autumn Term 1
Maple Class have had a fantastic half term filled with exciting learning and memorable experiences. In science, we’ve been exploring electricity and the children have thoroughly enjoyed making circuits using bulbs, wires, and switches. They’ve learned about conductors and insulators and were thrilled to see their circuits light up and come to life.
In literacy, our writing has been inspired by our topic on the Victorians. The children have produced detailed non-chronological reports and imaginative diary entries, drawing on what they’ve learned about Victorian life. We’ve also been reading Street Child by Berlie Doherty, which has helped us understand the challenges faced by children in the past and has sparked some thoughtful discussions.
Our class text this term has been Cool! by Michael Morpurgo, which has been a huge hit with everyone. The story captivated the class and encouraged a love of reading that we’ve seen grow throughout the term.
In maths, we began with a focus on place value and have now moved on to addition and subtraction. The children are enjoying using formal written methods, particularly the column method, and have shown great confidence and progress in their calculations.
PE has been another highlight, with the children taking part in gymnastics and using the wall bars to build sequences. They’ve also loved Mr Kelly’s PE lessons, which have focused on developing skills and teamwork through a variety of games.
In art, we’ve been studying the work of Paul Cézanne. The children explored his techniques and applied them to their own artwork, creating some beautiful and expressive pieces that they were proud to share.
One of the most exciting events this term was our residential trip with Year 4 to Land and Wave. Despite the cold weather, the children embraced every moment, taking part in activities such as den building, exploring Corfe Castle, and enjoying a campfire before bed. It was a wonderful experience that brought the children together and created lasting memories.
We’re incredibly proud of everything Maple Class have achieved this half term. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and teamwork have shone through in every subject. We’re looking forward to another exciting term ahead!

Summer Term 2
As we reach the end of another incredible academic year, Maple Class has been buzzing with energy, creativity, and curiosity. This final term has been packed with exciting learning opportunities, hands-on experiences, and joyful moments that have brought our class community even closer together. Here’s a look back at what we’ve been up to!
One of the highlights of our term in Literacy has been our guided reading sessions with the book Krindlekrax by Philip Ridley. The children were captivated by the quirky characters, the mysterious creature lurking beneath Lizard Street, and the brave journey of the unlikely hero, Ruskin Splinter. Through this story, we explored themes of courage, friendship, and believing in yourself. The children engaged in thoughtful discussions, made predictions, and even wrote alternative endings to the story!
In writing, we’ve been diving into the wonderful world of poetry. From the playful rhythm of limericks to the delicate structure of haikus, Maple Class has experimented with different poetic forms. We’ve focused on using creative language, similes, and alliteration to bring our poems to life. The children particularly enjoyed performing their poems aloud, showcasing their growing confidence and expression.
We also explored persuasive writing this term, and the class took on the challenge of writing letters to Mrs Legg and Mrs Astle to try and persuade her to ban homework! With passionate arguments, rhetorical questions, and some very convincing points, the children demonstrated just how powerful their writing can be when they have a purpose and audience in mind.
In Science, our focus has been on the life cycles of plants. We’ve conducted a range of investigations, including growing cress in different conditions to observe how light, water, and temperature affect growth. The children carefully recorded their observations and made thoughtful conclusions based on the evidence they gathered.
One of the most exciting experiments involved placing celery in coloured water to observe how water is transported through a plant.
We also learned about the different parts of a plant and their functions, from roots and stems to leaves and flowers. This learning was brought to life during our trip to Wessex Wild Farm in Tincleton, where we explored flowering plants in their natural habitats. The children discovered which parts of plants are edible, learned about pollination, and even had the chance to plant their own seeds. It was a fantastic day of outdoor learning and discovery.
Our topic this term has taken us on a geographical journey through rivers, coasts, and the water cycle. We began by learning how water moves through the environment, from evaporation to precipitation, and created colourful diagrams to help us remember each stage.
We then explored how rivers shape the land, looking at erosion, deposition, and how these processes affect people living near rivers. The children were fascinated by the power of water and how it can change landscapes over time.
To deepen our understanding, we compared local rivers like the River Frome with major world rivers such as the Amazon and the Nile. The children researched the wildlife, climate, and human activity around each river and presented their findings in creative posters and presentations.
This term, PE has been all about preparing for Sports Day, and Maple Class threw themselves into every practice session with enthusiasm and determination. From sprinting and long jump to relay races and obstacle courses, the children worked hard to improve their skills and support one another.
Sports Day itself was a brilliant success. The sun was shining, the cheers were loud, and the team spirit was stronger than ever. It was wonderful to see the children encouraging each other, celebrating their efforts, and showing great sportsmanship throughout the day.
As we approach the end of the year, Maple Class has also been busy preparing for the Year 6 Leavers’ Service. We’ve been practicing our end-of-term song with great excitement, and the children have shown real pride in their performance. It’s a special moment for the whole school community, and Maple Class is looking forward to sharing their voices and celebrating the achievements of our Year 6 pupils.
This term has been a wonderful way to round off what has been a truly memorable year. The children in Maple Class have worked incredibly hard, shown kindness and resilience, and grown in so many ways. Whether it’s through their writing, scientific investigations, or teamwork on the sports field, they have made us all proud.
A huge thank you to all the parents and carers for your continued support throughout the year. Your encouragement and involvement make such a difference.
We wish all our Maple Class families a happy, restful, and sunny summer break. We can’t wait to see what next year brings!

Each group researched their topic thoroughly, created props, and delivered their findings with confidence and flair. It was amazing to see how engaged and knowledgeable the children were – they truly became mini geologists!
One of the most memorable moments this half term was Outdoor Classroom Day, when we laced up our walking shoes and headed out on a hike to the local Dinosaur Footprints. This incredible experience brought our science learning to life in the most exciting way. Standing where dinosaurs once walked millions of years ago sparked awe and wonder in the children, and it was a perfect opportunity to connect our classroom learning with the real world. The children asked thoughtful questions, made observations, and truly appreciated the chance to explore nature and history in such a hands-on way.
Our topic this half term has been all about the Romans, and Maple Class have absolutely loved it. From learning how the Roman Empire was formed to discovering what the Romans brought to Britain, the children have been captivated by this incredible period in history. We explored Roman inventions, architecture, and even some of the things we still use today that originated in Roman times. The children particularly enjoyed learning about Roman roads, aqueducts, and the structure of Roman society. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have made our history lessons lively and full of thoughtful discussion.

The children looked at the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer and the equator, and learnt about their position to the sun. The children found it fascinating to learn about the tribes that inhabit different rainforest and their customs and traditions. As this topic continues after half term, Maple will focus more on deforestation and the impact this has on global warming.
In Literacy this half-term, the children learnt about a range of different genres. The children con-ducted their own research about an aspect on the rainforest, including animals and the Amazon River, and used this to inform their writing based on a non-chronological report. Year 3 had an ex-tra session each week, where they explored exciting vocabulary linked to settings and wrote their own setting description based on an inspirational picture. Maple ended the term by looking at play scripts and acted out an exciting performance of The Gingerbread Man.
In Science this half term, Maple learnt about ‘Animals, including Humans’. The children learnt about the different bones within the body and their role in protecting certain organs. They also learnt about joints, such as ball and socket and hinge joints, and why these joints are where they are and how they allow movement. We also learnt about muscles and tendons and made our own hands with string to replicate the movement of our fingers. Lastly, we learnt about nutrition and the values of each group on food packets.
In Art and DT this term, Maple learnt about David Hockney. They looked at the colour wheel and how complementary colours are used by Pop Artists to make their artwork vivid. They painted their own landscape, inspired by the work of David Hockney, using our surrounding environment.

Autumn Term 2
This half-term, Maple continued to focus on the topic of the ‘Ancient Egyptians’. The children learnt about the significant events in history and how this is influenced life today. Maple enjoyed learning about the different processes of the afterlife and the importance and reasons as to why mummification was so important to the afterlife. They took part in lots of guided reading tasks related to the topic which has embedded their subject knowledge and understanding.
In Literacy this half-term, the children had some exciting topics. They enjoyed writing their story about an adventure story based around a child who goes on a quest to Ancient Egypt. They fo-cussed on varied sentences and adventurous word choices which made their stories a pleasurable read. St George’s also had a special visitor to the school field… a dragon! The dragon was spotted flying above the field, so naturally the children had to investigate what clues were left behind. On further inspection, the children discovered a dragon nest with a beautiful dragon egg. After exploring the field for more clues, the children went back to class to devise a story on how and why a dragon visited our school field. They turned this into a story of their own, which were wonderful!
In Science this half term, Maple learnt how to investigate scientifically. They planned and con-ducted an investigating into the relationship between handspan and grip strength. The children tested these out and recorded their results. A lot of fun was had testing the comparisons of grip strength!
Maple have enjoyed taking part in swimming, dance, gymnastics and Forest School sessions this term. The progress the class have made in their swimming strokes has been very impressive. In dance the children became wild animals, where they had to think about movement, levels and poise. Mrs Legg was amazed by how in character they became and believed they were real life wild animals!
As we are on the countdown to Christmas, Maple have enjoyed taking part in the many crafting opportunities. We have decorated baubles for the the Christmas Tree Festival, designed and had made Christmas cards, thanks to the PTA, and taken part in Christmas Dubber front cover competition. Lots of preparation and rehearsals went into the Nativity. Mrs Legg was very impressed with the effort and attitude that the children displayed, and I think we can all agree that it was a wonderful service!
