"Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation." 

At St. George’s, we aim to: 

• provide fun, creative learning experiences, which encourage children to become more confident learners. 

• give pupils the opportunity to engage in open-ended projects where they make key decisions beyond what colour something should be or the type of finish 
• equip children to design, make and evaluate a product  
• teach children about great designers from around the world and the impact they have had, and the historical and cultural development of their designs 
•  create cultural awareness, whilst recognising and valuing similarities with, and differences between, other cultures and languages.       

• create cross-curricular learning opportunities, where possible and appropriate. 

• to ensure that lesson content is accessible to all learners 

The children are introduced to Design and Technology under the umbrella of the Early Years Foundation Stage in Reception where they have the opportunity to create with materials and become imaginative and expressive learners.  In KS1 and KS2 Design and Technology is taught through termly units encompassing technical knowledge, cooking and nutrition, textiles and mechanisms / product design.

We aim to provide an annual Purbeck Art’s Week experience for our children, and have previously welcomed artists and sculptors, as well as a TV director and fashion designer.
