St George's teaching staff have been using 'Talk for Writing' - The Talk for Writing approach enables children to read and write independently for a variety of audiences and purposes within different subjects. A key feature is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through 'talking the text'.

Aims of our writing lessons:

• Build children's story telling and writing skills.
• Enable children to access the wider curriculum.
• Teach grammar in context, linked to text types wherever possible.
• Engage children, developing their vocabulary using drama and discussion.
• Enrich children's experiences and interaction with a wide range of texts to write about.

Spelling Scheme

Once children have mastered phonics, children are taught spellings within their class, in most cases working on the words expected for their age range, using the Sounds Write style of teaching. 

Children need to learn the statutory word bank words appropriate to their age-range and key stage. Please click here to link to the National Curriculum Spelling Appendix, including Word Lists for Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6.
