Physical Education (PE)
Intent
At St George’s, our intent is to deliver a high-quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We aim to develop physically confident children who lead healthy, active lifestyles and understand the importance of physical activity for both physical and mental wellbeing.
Through our PE curriculum, we intend to:
- Provide all pupils with the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills.
- Promote enjoyment, engagement and a life-long love of physical activity and sport.
- Build confidence, resilience, teamwork and sporting values such as fairness and respect.
- Ensure all children, regardless of ability, have access to high-quality PE lessons and sporting opportunities.
- Develop staff expertise so that high-quality PE teaching is sustained across the school.
We place a strong emphasis on inclusion, ensuring that all pupils are supported and challenged to achieve their personal best.
Implementation
PE at St George’s is delivered using the Complete PE scheme, which provides a progressive, well-structured curriculum that aligns with the National Curriculum requirements. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build knowledge, skills and understanding over time, ensuring clear progression across year groups.
Key features of our implementation include:
- Specialist coaching: A highly skilled specialist coach delivers games lessons across the school, ensuring expert instruction and high-quality learning experiences for pupils.
- Curriculum coverage: Pupils experience a wide range of physical activities including games, gymnastics, dance and athletics, with clear progression in skills and physical development.
- Teacher development: Staff work alongside the specialist coach and benefit from high-quality CPD opportunities, supporting increased confidence and subject knowledge in PE.
- Consistency and assessment: Complete PE provides assessment tools that allow teachers to track pupils’ progress and adapt teaching to meet individual needs.
- Sports partnership: St George’s is an active member of the Purbeck School Sports Partnership, which provides pupils with opportunities to take part in competitions, festivals and training events alongside other schools in the Purbeck area. This helps to promote teamwork, sportsmanship and a positive attitude towards competition.
- Wider opportunities: Pupils are encouraged to participate in extracurricular clubs and inter-school events, enhancing their enjoyment of sport and physical activity beyond curriculum lessons.
Through this approach, St George’s ensures PE is engaging, inclusive and of a consistently high standard, enabling pupils to develop both physically and personally.
